Biography
Nemesea emerged from the Netherlands in 2002 as a symphonic goth metal ensemble assembled by vocalist and composer Manda Ophuis alongside guitarist Hendrik Jan de Jong. The pair honed their craft supporting fellow Dutch brood-rock outfit After Forever, whose style drew early comparisons, before securing a contract in 2003 with the independent imprint Ebony Tears that released their debut album Mana the following year.
The 2007 crowd-funded follow-up In Control marked a breakthrough that attracted distribution through Rough Trade and ultimately pointed the band toward Napalm Records. By the time Quiet Resistance arrived in 2010, electronics had begun surfacing in their arrangements while certain neo-classical flourishes receded in favor of a more direct alt-rock orientation; the record closed the chapter for Ophuis, who departed the lineup in 2016 and was succeeded by Sanne Mieloo.
Mieloo’s first contribution came on the fourth studio album Uprise, issued later that same year and produced by Guido Aalbers, whose credits include Muse, Coldplay, and No Doubt. The set featured the singles “Hear Me” and “Twilight.” The group sustained its electronic leanings and glossy pop sensibility on the 2019 release White Flag.
