Urgehal originated in 1992 within the Norwegian town of Hønefoss, founded by Trondr Nefas on screeches and lead guitar together with Enzifer, otherwise known as Mr. T.L. Messiah, on rhythm guitar. The band personifies classic necro-Norwegian black metal aesthetics, incorporating corpse paint, menacing outfits, leather, spikes, and every associated element. Demos issued in 1994 and 1995 added bassist Chiron and keyboard player Aradia to the roster, though the keyboardist’s role concluded soon after. Not until their first album Arma Christi appeared in 1997 did Urgehal recruit a live drummer, Uruz, born Jarle Byberg. Additional installments of raw, unrefined, misanthropic black metal emerged as 1998’s Massive Terrestrial Attack, 2001’s Atomkinder, and 2003’s Through Thick Fog Til Death, the latter introducing bassist Tomas "Sregroth" Torgersbråten. Two years afterward Southern Lord Records reissued that album in the United States while simultaneously presenting the new Urgehal recording Goat Craft Torment. Atomkinder arrived in 2006.
