Biography
Horna originated under the name Shadowed before establishing itself in 1993 as a cornerstone of Finnish black metal. Its moniker translates to “abyss,” and the group adheres strictly to the genre’s earliest conventions—rapid blastbeats, overt blasphemy, and chainsaw-like guitar tones. Few acts remain as resolutely underground, embracing the format of short-run split releases and vinyl pressings that define the style. Consequently the catalog has grown to more than thirty entries across numerous imprints, with no sign of reduced output. Membership has likewise shifted repeatedly, musicians entering and departing across every instrument, yet the emphasis on quantity has not diminished the consistent delivery of unrefined, icy black metal.
Founding guitarists Shatraug and Moredhel were later joined by drummer Gorthaur, after which the band self-released the demo Varjoissa. Nazgul, known for his work in Satanic Warmaster and Gestapo 666, entered for the follow-up recording Hiidentorni in 1997. Under his involvement the group issued multiple vinyl and CD titles, among them the full-lengths Haudankylmyyden Mailla and Sudentaival. During the same period the other members pursued numerous parallel endeavors, forming or contributing to Battle, Battlelore, Mirkhall, Sargeist, Ravening, and Khert-Neter. In 2001 Corvus took over vocal duties; guitarist Saturnus arrived two years later, solidifying the present nucleus of Shatraug, Corvus, and Saturnus. Subsequent output under Corvus has encompassed additional full-length albums, the live recording Black Metal Warfare, several EPs, and collaborative splits with Musta Surma, Desolation Triumphalis, Ouroboros, Woods of Infinity, Behexen, Blackdeath, Kerberos, Tenebrae in Perpetuum, Sacrificia Mortuorum, and Peste Noire.
Listeners seeking an entry point amid the extensive catalog may begin with the favorably received 2006 album Ääniä Yössä. The following year Horna delivered Sotahuuto, a stylistic homage to Bathory issued through Grievantee, together with the MMCD Pimeyden Hehku, made available during the “Pest Pandemic Contamination Over Europe” Tour.
