Biography
When Norway's notoriously brutal black metal underground first drew widespread scrutiny during the mid-1990s, Mayhem received early recognition as the scene's founding figures, yet Emperor ultimately collected the bulk of critical praise for innovations that reshaped the genre more profoundly than any rival act. Although anti-Christian themes permeated Norwegian black metal, Emperor devised distinctive musical vehicles for such ideas; their sound blended raw fury and aggression with the somber, sweeping melodic language of Norwegian folk and classical traditions, lending atmospheric weight to lyrics that often remained difficult to decipher. The band conjured not only demonic dread but also the stark isolation of harsh Nordic winters, while pagan motifs evoked a mythic pre-Christian era when Scandinavian societies ranked among the world's most powerful forces, prompting some observers to label the style "Viking metal." Even as Emperor's recordings earned global admiration within heavy metal circles, several members' participation in the era's anti-Christian campaigns and associated violence triggered arrests, convictions, and repeated personnel changes.
The band's earliest configuration comprised Ihsahn on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, bassist Mortiis—who first steered the group toward Norwegian folk influences—and drummer Samoth. This lineup captured the 1992 demo Wrath of the Tyrant before recruiting Faust, born Bard G. Eithun, on drums and shifting Samoth to guitar. The revised quartet issued the split EP Hordanes Land alongside Enslaved, after which Mortiis departed both the band and Norway for reasons that remained undisclosed; he relocated to Sweden and launched a solo career frequently performed in elf attire. Tchort joined on bass for the 1994 debut album In the Nightside Eclipse, which drew widespread acclaim and cultivated an international following. Concurrently, Samoth received a conviction for arson involving the torching of an ancient wooden church, Tchort was imprisoned for burglary, knife assault, and desecration, and Faust was incarcerated for arson, burglary, and murder after fatally stabbing a man fourteen times outside Lillehammer's Olympic Park following an unwanted advance.
Upon Samoth's release, the group reconvened with bassist Alver and Trym, previously of Enslaved, on drums. The three-song EP Reverence appeared in late 1996 ahead of the 1997 release Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, an album that further developed and intensified the achievements of its predecessor. After Alver exited, Ihsahn and Samoth handled bass duties in the studio while session players Tyr on bass and keyboardist Charmand Grimloch augmented live performances. Emperor delivered its third studio album, IX Equilibrium, in 1999, followed the next year by the concert document Emperial Live Ceremony.
