Formed in Oslo, the black metal collective Satyricon has long been propelled by the partnership of Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) and Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad). The group first surfaced in 1994 with Dark Medieval Times, an album steeped in the ferocious blastbeats and glacial textures that defined classic Norwegian black metal. Over subsequent years the duo broadened their palette, folding post-rock and industrial elements into a sequence of widely praised releases that includes Age Of Nero (2008), Deep Calleth Upon Deep (2017), and Satyricon & Munch (2022).

The project originated in 1990 as Eczema and underwent several personnel shifts before adopting the Satyricon name in 1991. With Satyr handling vocals, guitar, bass, and keyboards alongside Frost on drums, the band delivered its stark debut, Dark Medieval Times, in 1994; the equally ferocious follow-up, Shadowthrone, appeared the next year. Nemesis Divina, issued in 1997, became the first Satyricon album to reach American listeners. It was succeeded by the Megiddo EP, which largely reworked earlier tracks, and by Intermezzo II in 1999, which introduced new compositions. Rebel Extravaganza arrived shortly afterward, steering the music deeper into synth-tinged gothic territory. To mark the band’s tenth year, the 2002 compilation Ten Horns: Ten Diadems was released, after which Satyricon signed with Capitol and unveiled Volcano. That album, the group’s biggest commercial success at the time, earned the Norwegian Grammy for Best Metal Album.

The impulse to transcend narrow genre lines persisted on Now, Diabolical (2006) and Age of Nero (2008), both of which further integrated post-rock, gothic, and industrial textures. The self-titled eighth studio album from 2013 became the first Satyricon release to top Norway’s official album chart. Deep Calleth Upon Deep, issued in 2017, achieved chart placement across multiple territories and featured contributions from jazz saxophonist Håkon Kornstad as well as musicians from the Oslo Philharmonic. In 2022 the band connected black metal with visual art through Satyricon & Munch, a 56-minute work composed for the Edvard Munch exhibition housed at the MUNCH museum in Oslo.
