Biography
Hailing from Norway's Sogndal region, Windir fused black metal's raw aggression with the folk traditions, historical narratives, and mythological elements of Scandinavia. The project, whose name translates as "Primal Warrior," originated in 1994 under the direction of Terje "Valfar" Bakken, who handled vocals and multiple instruments. After releasing a pair of demos, the group launched its recorded career with the 1997 album Sóknardalr, featuring Steingrim on drums and Steinarson delivering clean vocals in the Sognamål dialect. Two years afterward came Arntor, a complete concept album drawn from a local warrior legend sharing that title; unlike the debut, its lyrics appeared in English to reach broader audiences.
After the record earned widespread critical acclaim, Valfar expanded Windir into a full performing ensemble by recruiting guitarists Strom and Sture, keyboardist Righ, and bassist Hvàll ahead of the 2001 release 1184. Cosmocrator supplied the clean vocals on that album, which retained its focus on regional Norse themes yet reduced the folk elements in favor of a tighter, more metallic approach also evident on the fourth album, Likferd, issued in 2003. Critics around the world hailed the latter as an unqualified success, positioning the band for continued prominence.
Tragedy intervened on January 14, 2004, when Valfar departed on foot for his family's remote cabin at Fagereggi but failed to arrive. Concerned relatives alerted authorities, who launched a search that located his remains on the 17th at Reppastølen in the Sogndal valley. Caught unprepared by harsh weather and heavy snow, he had tried to retrace his steps but succumbed to exposure and hypothermia. The loss effectively dissolved Windir; the surviving members arranged a benefit concert honoring their departed leader and assembled the 2004 compilation Valfar, Ein Windir from unreleased Windir recordings to support Valfar's family.
