Biography
Ion Dissonance emerged from Montreal, Quebec, in the middle of 2002 as Canadian specialists in metallic hardcore, merging razor-sharp, precisely timed drumming and an aggressive, powerful guitar approach with tracks that hit with the intensity of a contaminated thermonuclear blast, thereby forging a fresh and severe presence within the broader metal landscape. Guitarists Sebastien Chaput and Antoine Lussier joined forces with drummer J.F. Richard—three metal enthusiasts intent on pushing the genre toward unexplored sonic territory—to launch the project. They enlisted vocalist Gabriel McCaughry alongside bassist Sebastien Painchaud, after which the band tracked its initial demo during autumn 2002 and issued the material to supporters as .357 before the year closed. The EP attracted favorable critical notice, prompting Ion Dissonance to perform alongside acts such as the Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, and the Black Dahlia Murder. Work on the group’s debut full-length commenced in spring 2003, though Painchaud departed beforehand and Miguel Valade stepped in on bass. Willowtip Records, the Pennsylvania-based metal imprint, issued Breathing Is Irrelevant that autumn, after which an American tour took place at the start of 2004. The band sustained its touring pace across Canada and the United States for the remainder of the year, even as Valade exited late in 2004. Xavier St. Laurent assumed bass duties in early 2005, allowing the musicians to maintain their demanding live itinerary until they paused in May to record the follow-up album Solace, which Abacus Recordings released in September 2005. Additional performances ensued, encompassing slots at several prominent extreme metal festivals throughout North America, while a split CD with Despised Icon that included rare demo tracks appeared in June 2006. That same month Gabriel McCaughry revealed his departure owing to creative differences; by autumn the band announced that Kevin McCaughey, previously of Shaolin, had joined as the new vocalist and participated in sessions for Minus the Herd, issued by Abacus in June 2007.
