Originating in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the blue-collar punk outfit Comeback Kid—commonly shortened to CBK—pairs emphatic vocal delivery with an ultra-rapid rhythm section and two guitarists devoted to riff-driven writing. First attached to Victory, the group generated multiple Billboard-charting releases, among them the widely praised Broadcasting in 2007 and Die Knowing in 2014, before signing with Nuclear Blast in 2017. Their seventh studio album, Heavy Steps, surfaced in 2022, while Trouble followed in 2024.

The Canadian ensemble came together in 2002 when vocalist Scott Wade aligned with guitarist Andrew Neufeld, who also fronts the Winnipeg Christian hardcore band Figure Four, and recruited second guitarist Jeremy Hiebert, likewise of Figure Four, along with bassist Cliff Heide and drummer Kyle Profetta. Although Neufeld and Hiebert maintained commitments to Figure Four, Comeback Kid assembled a self-released six-track demo that secured a contract with the California hardcore imprint Face Down Records, which issued the debut full-length Turn It Around in spring 2003. By that point the band, after cycling through several temporary bassists, had stabilized with Kevin Call on bass. Following widespread touring across Canada, Europe, and the United States behind the record, Comeback Kid moved to the influential punk and emo label Victory Records in 2004.

Victory brought out the band’s second album, produced by pop-punk veteran Bill Stevenson of Black Flag and Descendents, under the title Wake the Dead in February 2005. After further extensive touring that included shows with Madball, Sick of It All, and Gorilla Biscuits, Wade declared his exit in early 2006. His final performance occurred that summer, after which the remaining members continued as a quartet with Neufeld assuming lead vocals. The reduced lineup delivered Broadcasting... in February 2007 and resumed road work. The following year’s live document Through the Noise preserved a concert in combined CD and DVD format. A fourth studio effort, Symptoms + Cures, appeared in 2010 and introduced guitarist Casey Hjelmberg. Hjelmberg exited in 2012; Stu Ross, previously of Misery Signals and Living with Lions, took the spot and debuted on record with the 2014 release Die Knowing. Founding drummer Profeta left shortly after that album. In June 2017 the band issued the single “Absolute” ahead of its sixth studio album, Outsider, which Nuclear Blast released that August. The 2021 hardcore anthem “Heavy Steps” preceded the album of the same name in early 2022. Prior to the 2024 release of Trouble on Sharptone, the group unveiled the anthemic single “Trouble in the Winner’s Circle.”
