Biography
A Boston-based hardcore band, Defeater has funneled its musical intensity into a string of thematically linked releases that began with Travels in 2008 and continued through Letters Home five years later. The group blends melodic hardcore with post-hardcore and emo textures, refinements that became especially clear once the band joined the Epitaph roster and issued its self-titled 2019 album.
Defeater came together in 2004. After multiple personnel shifts, the lineup stabilized around vocalist Derek Archambault, guitarists Jay Maas and Jake Woodruff, bassist Mike Poulin, and drummer Joe Longobardi. From the start the musicians favored conceptual storytelling; their debut, Travels (2008), followed the struggles of an unnamed post-WWII working-class family whose relationships were marked by complication and dysfunction. Initially released on Topshelf, the album was followed by a move to Bridge Nine Records, which issued the next two full-lengths, Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (2011) and Letters Home (2013). Both records extended the same fictional family saga with additional chapters.
In 2015 Defeater signed to Epitaph Records and delivered its fourth album, Abandoned. Shortly afterward, guitarist Jay Maas departed and was succeeded by Adam Crowe. Following a short touring break, the band worked with veteran producer Will Yip—known for projects with Quicksand, Title Fight, and Lauryn Hill—to record a fifth album. Epitaph released the self-titled LP in 2019.
