California band the Story So Far blend pop-punk origins with the sharper contours of post-hardcore and the nostalgic yearning of classic emo. Over time the group matured into one of the scene’s more prominent outfits, shifting toward an indie-inflected approach that placed their 2018 breakthrough Proper Dose on the Billboard charts. A long interval followed before the 2024 arrival of their next full-length, I Want to Disappear.

Walnut Creek, California, served as the birthplace for the Story So Far when the band assembled in 2007. The original roster featured vocalist Parker Cannon, guitarists Kevin Geyer and Kevin Ambrose, drummer Ryan Torf, and bassist Kelen Capener. After Ambrose departed in 2010, William Levy stepped in on guitar. The group joined Pure Noise Records and issued their first album, Under Soil and Dirt, in 2011. Despite a demanding tour calendar they also produced several EPs and split releases before unveiling the follow-up What You Don’t See in 2013. That record logged one week at number 46 on the Billboard 200, a mark later surpassed by the self-titled 2015 LP, which climbed to number 23.

Exhausted from constant road work, the Story So Far paused for a necessary break, then reconvened in the studio during spring 2017 to begin work on their fourth album. The charity 7-inch “Out of It” surfaced that September as an early preview. A second single, “Let It Go,” arrived in July 2018 and signaled the September release of Proper Dose. Influenced by the band’s shared admiration for the Beatles, the album introduced acoustic and electronic textures that expanded their songwriting. Proper Dose became their strongest chart performance to date, entering the Billboard Top 200 at number 19. Extensive touring ensued, and additional singles and videos from the record continued to appear throughout 2019.

In May 2022 Capener revealed his departure. Rather than recruit a permanent replacement immediately, Torf recorded the bass lines while Nik Bruzzese joined as a touring bassist for live performances. Aside from a concert recording and scattered non-album tracks, the Story So Far had remained quiet after Proper Dose until they dropped the new studio song “Big Blind” in August 2023 ahead of their support run with blink-182. The follow-up single “Letterman” emerged the next March as promotion intensified for the fifth album. I Want to Disappear arrived in June 2024 and captured the members’ personal evolution across the six-year span since their prior release. The muscular, concentrated set was tracked by producer and engineer Jon Markson at Animal Farm studio in Flemington, New Jersey.
