Biography
Turnover first surfaced at the dawn of the 2010s, moving past their initial emo and punk foundations toward an inward-looking approach that blended dream pop’s atmospheric richness with indie pop’s gentle tunefulness. Their 2015 release Peripheral Vision initiated this evolution by softening the guitar crunch and introducing shoegaze textures alongside bright, layered vocal harmonies. Subsequent efforts expanded further into reflective territory with 2017’s Good Nature and embraced breezy soft-pop elements on 2019’s Altogether. By 2022’s Myself in the Way, the group had arrived at a polished fusion of slowcore and disco, drawing inspiration from Quincy Jones and Chic.
The band originated in Virginia Beach in 2009 and began as an emo-pop outfit reminiscent of the Get Up Kids and Texas Is the Reason before shifting toward introspective dream pop. Its original lineup featured vocalist Austin Getz, drummer Casey Getz, bassist Danny Dempsey, and guitarists Alex Dimaiuat and Kyle Kogan, who entered the scene with a self-titled EP in 2011. A split single alongside Citizen appeared the following year, and the group issued its first full-length album, Magnolia, on Run for Cover Records in early 2013. Dimaiuat and Kogan had already exited by then, leaving Eric Soucy to handle lead guitar while Austin Getz assumed rhythm duties. This revised configuration shaped the more melodic and atmospheric indie-rock direction of 2015’s Peripheral Vision. The same stylistic refinement carried into the third album, 2017’s Good Nature, again produced by Will Yip; although Soucy contributed to the sessions, he left shortly before the August release. The remaining members continued as a trio, with Shane Moran and Nick Rayfield supporting live performances on guitar. After relocating across the country to California, Austin Getz found himself separated from the other two, yet they sustained their creative partnership. Returning to Yip’s Studio 4, the musicians explored fresh territory on late-2019’s Altogether, weaving lounge and jazz accents into their increasingly accessible pop framework. Following a North American tour they embarked on a European run that ended abruptly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Back home, members pursued outside interests: Austin studied meditation and joined a local volunteer fire department, Casey worked at a state park, Dempsey honed his visual art, and Rayfield, now an official member, focused on skating and operating a retail shop. When recording resumed, Austin joined Yip as co-producer, incorporating disco strings, slowcore atmospheres, and Auto-Tune. The outcome was 2022’s Myself in the Way, a densely layered and meticulously crafted pop record whose only remaining echo of emo resides in the candid emotional directness of its lyrics.
