MewithoutYou emerged from Philadelphia in 2001 as a unit whose sound fused experimental rock architecture, punk-driven force, spoken-word phrasing, and themes rooted in Judeo-Christian tradition. Aaron and Michael Weiss, shaped by early exposure to Jawbox and Burning Airlines, first honed their aggressive approach as frontmen of the Operation. After issuing an album via Takehold Records, the Operation’s members established mewithoutYou as a side project expressly intended to explore alternate sonic territories, recruiting bassist Ray Tadeo, guitarist Christopher Kleinberg, and drummer Richard Mazzotta. Tooth & Nail Records signed the quintet on the strength of its unpolished urgency; Tadeo soon departed and Daniel Pishock stepped in on bass. The Operation dissolved shortly afterward, freeing the musicians to concentrate solely on the new group.

The band’s debut full-length, [A --> B] Life, surfaced in summer 2002. Its well-received follow-up, Catch for Us the Foxes, appeared in late 2004, after which Pishock left to pursue separate endeavors and Greg Jehanian assumed the bass chair. mewithoutYou spent the remainder of 2005 on the road alongside Dredg and Coheed & Cambria, then joined Thursday for additional dates the next year. Brother, Sister arrived in September 2006, incorporating guest contributions from Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk and members of Anathallo. Kleinberg exited around this period, though he rejoined briefly for the band’s 2008 summer tour.

Looking ahead to 2009, the musicians began shaping songs that traded their customary post-hardcore textures for acoustic instrumentation and the folk sensibility associated with Neutral Milk Hotel. The resulting album, It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All a Dream! It’s Alright, took its expansive title from the writings of Sufi teacher Bawa Muhaiyaddeen. Ten Stories followed in 2012, again produced by Daniel Smith, and unfolded as a story about a traveling circus that met its end in late-nineteenth-century Montana. mewithoutYou resurfaced in 2015 with Pale Horses, produced by Will Yip and marked by a return to the group’s earlier visceral force. Yip also helmed the band’s seventh album, [Untitled], released in 2018.
