In 1993, singer Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck launched the progressive hardcore outfit Glassjaw in Hempstead, New York, after the longtime friends had already begun writing together as teenagers. Frequent lineup shifts marked the band’s early period, though guitarist Todd N. Weinstock, bassist Manuel Carrero, and drummer Sammy Siegler stabilized the group long enough to record its debut full-length, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, which appeared in 2000. For the summer tour supporting the Deftones, Siegler stepped aside and ex-Orange 9MM drummer Larry Gorman took his place, while Dave Allen replaced Carrero on bass. Two years afterward, Glassjaw signed with Warner Bros. and delivered Worship and Tribute in July 2002. Activity gradually dwindled, accompanied by further personnel adjustments in late 2004 when Weinstock departed to form the retro-dance project Men, Women and Children and Manuel Carrero returned in Allen’s stead. Gorman’s commitments to singer Daryl Palumbo’s side project Head Automatica created another vacancy, filled by Durijah Lang. Following a two-year break, the band resurfaced for a limited number of concerts in 2005 and issued the B-sides EP El Mark. Touring and recording persisted, yielding the 2011 EPs Our Color Green (The Singles) and Coloring Book, yet a new studio album remained absent until 2017—fifteen years after Worship and Tribute. Century Media released that third LP, Material Control, in December, showcasing core members Palumbo and Beck alongside drummer Billy Rymer and additional contributors Chad Hasty, George Reynolds, and Ariel Telford.
