Biography
Hailing from Long Island, New York, From Autumn to Ashes built a following as one of East Coast hardcore’s more melody-driven outfits. Their approach blended hardcore, metal, and thrash with alternative rock and screamo elements, resulting in material that emphasized tunefulness—sometimes reaching lush textures—while vocalist Benjamin Perri supplied an unrelenting, full-throated delivery. Drummer Francis Mark complemented this contrast with smoother, straightforward singing. The group came together in 2000, its lineup completed by bassist Josh Newton alongside guitarists Brian Deneeve and Jon Cox. After stirring interest locally, they cut their first album, Too Bad You're Beautiful, for Ferret Music in 2001; limited distribution notwithstanding, the release moved more than 50,000 copies. In 2002 the band, which had already appeared on the Warped Tour on multiple occasions, issued the Sin, Sorrow and Sadness EP through Tribunal. Their sophomore full-length, The Fiction We Live, arrived the following year and marked their debut on Vagrant Records.
From Autumn to Ashes resurfaced in August 2005 with Abandon Your Friends. Internal tensions nearly dissolved the group after that album, prompting a five-month hiatus; once resolved, guitarist Rob Lauritsen joined in Cox’s stead. The refreshed lineup stayed intact long enough to rejoin the Warped Tour for summer 2006 and to begin work on fresh songs. Late that year, as tracking neared completion and vocals were set to begin, Perri exited abruptly, citing a loss of enthusiasm for the music. Rather than seek a replacement, Mark stepped from behind the drums to assume every vocal role, drawing on his prior frontman experience in the side project Biology alongside Newton. Touring drummer Jeff Gretz, formerly of Zao, was brought in to support a March 2007 run of national shows that preceded the April arrival of Holding a Wolf by the Ears. The live recording Live at Looney Tunes appeared in 2008.
