Emerging from Florida, Copeland specialized in moody yet introspective indie rock distinguished by literate lyrics, attaining national prominence during the mid-2000s via releases such as Eat, Sleep, Repeat in 2006 and You Are My Sunshine in 2008. Following a 2009 breakup, the ensemble reconvened for Ixora in 2014 and stayed active, issuing their sixth album, Blushing, in 2019.

Pianist, guitarist, and vocalist Aaron Marsh joined forces with bassist and backing vocalist James Likeness to establish the band; the two longtime Lakeland, Florida residents started composing together in 2001. After adding lead guitarist Bryan Laurenson, rhythm guitarist Thomas Blair, and drummer Rusty Fuller, the initial lineup was set and took its name from the noted American composer Aaron Copland. Copeland issued a split EP with Pacifico in 2001, although Blair departed before year's end. As popularity increased, various fans and writers labeled the group a Christian rock act owing to spiritual undertones in select songs, yet principal songwriter Marsh dismissed the classification, informing a reporter that despite some members' devout faith, "We have no agenda in our band other than art."

The Militia Group noticed the band in 2002 and, following a contract agreement, Copeland recorded its debut album, Beneath Medicine Tree, partly shaped by Marsh's grandmother's death and his girlfriend's health scare. In 2005 the group delivered its second album, In Motion, which introduced new drummer Jonathan Bucklew in place of Rusty Fuller. Copeland followed with its third album, Eat, Sleep, Repeat, only a year later; originally issued by the Militia Group in November 2006, the set was promptly reissued after the band signed with Columbia. The Columbia association ended quickly when the signing A&R executive departed, prompting negotiations for release and leading the band back to the Militia Group for 2007's Dressed Up and In Line. By Dressed Up's release James Likeness had exited to focus on art and design, while the group also left the Militia Group for Tooth & Nail Records.

Copeland issued You Are My Sunshine in 2008, with Marsh performing bass alongside keyboards, guitar, and horn and string arrangements. After extensive touring the band announced its dissolution in 2009 and scheduled a farewell tour. Post-disbandment, Marsh launched the Vanguard Room recording studio, pursued his hip-hop-influenced project the Lulls in Traffic, and produced other artists. Bryan Laurenson meanwhile recorded with his side project States, which included Jonathan Bucklew. In 2014 Copeland reunited with Aaron Marsh, Bryan Laurenson, and Jonathan Bucklew, adding Stephen Laurenson (formerly the touring rhythm guitarist and a States member) and bassist Bobby Walker. Marsh produced the new album Ixora at the Vanguard Room, releasing it in November 2014; the following year the group embarked on an acoustic tour paired with Paramore. They returned in 2019 with their sixth studio album, Blushing.
