Originally hailing from Charleston, SC, most members of alternative pop/rock outfit the Working Title first connected as high school friends. After performing separately in local groups, the four musicians united in 2001 to form a single ensemble devoted to introspective indie rock. Their sound echoed Switchfoot while absorbing inspiration from sources as varied as underground punk, the Counting Crows, and Kid Dynamite. Joel Hamilton (vocals/guitar/piano), Adam Pavao (guitar), Chris Ginn (bass), and Ross Taylor (percussion/drums) completed a self-produced debut album, Sincerely, within six months and sold several thousand copies independently in their hometown. Universal executive Kevin Law discovered the project, leading the Working Title to become the inaugural signing on his imprint Cause for Alarm. Late 2003 brought the seven-song Everyone Here Is Wrong EP, after which the band shared stages with Mae, mewithoutYou, Switchfoot, and Our Lady Peace while also appearing on multiple Warped Tour dates. Summer 2006 saw the arrival of their first full-length record, About-Face, coinciding with a month-long support slot alongside the Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows on their co-headlining tour.
