Biography
In 2003 the emo-infused pop-punk outfit Just Surrender came together, though the quartet initially operated under the name A Second Chance. The lineup coalesced around three high-school friends—bassist/vocalist Jason Maffucci, guitarist Andrew Meunier, and drummer Steve Miller—until guitarist/vocalist Dan Simons completed the roster. Hailing from Dover Plains, NY, the band tracked a four-song EP under producer John Naclerio (Brand New, Senses Fail). Shortly after the tracks appeared online, they amassed nearly half a million plays, while the alternating vocals drew immediate parallels to Taking Back Sunday. Expanding local audiences at the Chance Theater in nearby Poughkeepsie caught the attention of fellow New Yorkers Autopilot Off, who invited the group on the road. Those dates quickly opened doors to additional bills alongside Bayside, Hawthorne Heights, Matchbook Romance, the Early November, and others. March 2005 brought a signing with Broken English Records—co-owned by Naclerio and Autopilot Off’s Chris Hughes—after which the band adopted the name Just Surrender to avoid trademark conflicts. Their first full-length for the label, If These Streets Could Talk, arrived in July 2005, prompting the customary cycle of touring. Early 2007 saw Meunier exit Just Surrender.
