Biography
British quintet You Me at Six blended post-hardcore, melodic pop-punk, and aggressive alt-rock on their 2008 debut Take Off Your Colours before achieving wider recognition with the 2010 follow-up Hold Me Down, which climbed to number five in the U.K. Over the ensuing decade the group maintained consistent chart presence, earning gold certification for each of their first four albums in Britain, while Cavalier Youth from 2014 entered the Billboard Top 200 in America. Their seventh studio effort, Suckapunch, arrived to strong notices in 2021.
The five members—Josh Franceschi on vocals, Max Helyer and Chris Miller on guitar, Matt Barnes on bass, and Dan Flint on drums—first assembled in Weybridge, Surrey, in 2004. Their initial recordings appeared as the 2006 four-track EP We Know What It Means to Be Alone and the subsequent Untitled 4 Track EP. One year later the band issued Take Off Your Colours through Slam Dunk Records in the United Kingdom and Epitaph Records in the United States. Matty O'Grady and John Mitchell handled production on the album, which peaked at number 25 on the U.K. chart and yielded the singles "Save It for the Bedroom," "Finders Keepers," and "Kiss and Tell." Steady touring, highlighted by a slot at the 2007 Slam Dunk Festival, fueled growing support and brought two nominations for Best British Band at the Kerrang! Awards in 2008 and 2009.
Reuniting with O'Grady and Mitchell, the band delivered Hold Me Down in 2010; the set featured "Underdog" and "Liquid Confidence" and again reached the U.K. top five. The following year they moved to Los Angeles to record Sinners Never Sleep under Garth Richardson, whose past credits include Biffy Clyro and Rage Against the Machine. The heavier album included guest vocals from Bring Me the Horizon's Oli Sykes and Parkway Drive's Winston McCall, entered the U.K. chart at number three in late 2011, and prompted a 2012 digital single written for Thorpe Park's The Swarm ride. Their sold-out Wembley Arena show closing the year's tour was later issued as a live CD/DVD package in 2013.
Mid-2013 brought a collaboration with Neal Avron, resulting in Cavalier Youth, which topped the U.K. album chart upon its early-2014 release. After reflecting on their first ten years, the group shifted direction for the 2016 album Night People, enlisting Nashville producer Jacquire King. Material from the subsequent LP VI began surfacing with the track "3AM" ahead of its fall release. The band tracked their seventh album Suckapunch in 2020; it appeared the next year and swiftly reached number one on the U.K. Albums chart. Truth Decay, their eighth full-length, followed in 2023 and included the six pre-released singles highlighted by "Deep Cuts."
