Originating in Watford, a satellite community outside London, Lower Than Atlantis came together in 2007 when Mike Duce, responsible for lead vocals and rhythm guitar, joined forces with Ben Sansom on lead guitar and backing vocals. Their common enthusiasm for groups including Biffy Clyro, NOFX, and blink-182 shaped the band’s earliest musical approach. By the close of 2008, after several shifts in the bass and drums positions, the group issued its first EP, Bretton. Lasting less than twenty minutes across eight songs, the EP’s rapid-fire melodic hardcore punk style pointed toward the direction of the band’s 2010 debut full-length, Far Q. Once Eddy Thrower joined on drums and Declan Hart took over bass as permanent members, the quartet headed back into the studio for its second album, World Record, which arrived in 2011. Adopting a broader alternative rock palette influenced by Foo Fighters and Jimmy Eat World, that record marked the group’s ongoing shift away from hardcore punk toward melodic indie rock. Early in 2012 the band secured a contract with Island Records and delivered its third album, Changing Tune, in October of the same year. Two years afterward, having ended its association with Island, Lower Than Atlantis confirmed a fresh agreement with Sony Music. Further distancing itself from its hardcore punk origins, the group unveiled its self-titled fourth album, oriented toward arena-scale appeal, in October 2014. Its fifth release, Safe in Sound, sustaining the anthemic rock approach, surfaced in early 2017.
