Luke Prebble, Ben Bishop, and James Pipe launched Canterbury in Farnham, Surrey in 2005 after meeting as boarding-school classmates, with Mike Sparks on vocals and guitar plus Scott Peters on drums completing the roster two years later. Before issuing any recordings, the band built visibility through early support slots alongside Against Me!, You Me at Six, and We Are the Ocean. Though tracked in 2007, their debut album Thank You surfaced only in 2009 as a free download from the band’s site, further expanding their following. A U.K. headline tour in early 2010 preceded the Calm Down EP. After Ben Bishop departed, Prebble assumed bass duties and the remaining quartet prepared its second album. Heavy in the Day was announced at the start of 2012 and appeared that July, supported by another headline tour. In April 2013 the group signed with Hassle Records for its next release; around the same time Scott Peters left, and former All Forgotten member Chris Velissarides took over on drums. Partly financed via Pledge Music, sessions occurred in summer 2013 and yielded the third album, Dark Days, in early 2014.
