Tonight Alive came together in 2008 when guitarists Jake Hardy and Whakaio Taahi joined forces with bassist Cameron Adler, drummer Matt Best, and sixteen-year-old vocalist Jenna McDougall. The Australian pop-punk group sharpened their skills at youth centers throughout Sydney, issuing a trio of EPs that gained steady momentum—All Shapes and Disguises and Consider This in 2010, followed by Let It Land in 2011. Their first major-label effort, What Are You So Scared Of?, appeared on Sony Australia in October 2011, registering on both domestic and American charts before Fearless Records gave it a U.S. release the next year. The follow-up full-length, The Other Side, surfaced in 2013 and entered the Australian ARIA albums chart at number five while reaching number 43 on the Billboard 200. After the single “Human Interaction” paved the way, producer David Bendeth guided the band’s third album, Limitless, which surfaced in early 2016. In April 2017 the group signed with Hopeless Records and released the standalone track “World Away.” Later that year they recorded in Thailand with Dave Petrovic, unveiling the songs “Temple” and “Crack My Heart” that would anchor their fourth album. Before the record appeared, Taahi left the lineup, leaving the remaining quartet to deliver Underworld in January 2018.
