Biography
Emerging from the suburbs surrounding Baltimore, Maryland in 2003, All Time Low began as a high school cover ensemble before shifting into a melodic pop-punk outfit shaped by earlier groups including New Found Glory and blink-182. They remained a consistent force in the late-2000s landscape, appearing regularly on the Warped Tour circuit from their breakthrough second album So Wrong, It's Right (2007) through their highest-charting sixth full-length Future Hearts (2015). After experimenting with a more pop-oriented direction on 2017's Last Young Renegade, the group reclaimed their pop-punk foundation during the early 2020s via Wake Up, Sunshine and Tell Me I'm Alive.
Co-founders singer/guitarist Alex Gaskarth and guitarist Jack Barakat anchored the lineup, completed by bassist Zack Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson, whose contributions fueled the band's lively pop-punk style and boisterous performances often featuring silly string and beach balls. Balancing rehearsals with school obligations, the members booked East Coast and southern dates during breaks. With support from the local Emerald Moon imprint they released the four-song EP The Three Words to Remember in Dealing with the End in 2004, followed one year later by the full-length The Party Scene.
During summer touring the quartet shared stages with comparable acts such as Motion City Soundtrack, the Early November, and Plain White T's. They also crossed paths with fellow pop-punk outfit Amber Pacific, who recommended the young group to Hopeless Records. Impressed by the material, the label welcomed All Time Low into its roster by March 2006, shortly before the members completed high school. Freed from academic demands, they issued the seven-song EP Put Up or Shut Up that July, consisting primarily of fresh takes on prior songs.
The band backed the EP with select Warped Tour appearances before joining Amber Pacific on the road again. Their first Hopeless full-length, So Wrong, It's Right, arrived in 2007. After Alternative Press named them Band of the Year in 2008, All Time Low delivered their second album, Nothing Personal, in July 2009. Entering the Billboard charts at number four, the release elevated them among leading emo-pop acts. The following year brought the CD/DVD sets MTV Unplugged and Straight to DVD, bridging the gap while the members prepared their Interscope major-label debut.
Dirty Work, which included the single "I Feel Like Dancin'," surfaced in 2011 and debuted at number six on the Billboard charts before the group resumed touring. In 2012 All Time Low announced their departure from Interscope and premiered the new track "The Reckless and the Brave" on their site in June. They promptly returned to Hopeless and began recording, resulting in Don't Panic's November 2012 release; it was reissued nearly a year later with four new songs and four acoustic versions as Don't Panic: It's Longer Now! Their sixth album, Future Hearts, followed in 2015 and reunited them with Dirty Work producer John Feldmann. Straight to DVD 2: Past, Present & Future, a sequel to the 2010 live release, appeared in 2016. The single "Dirty Laundry" preceded their seventh studio album, Last Young Renegade, in February 2017, with the full set arriving on Fueled by Ramen that June and featuring the additional singles "Nice2KnoU" and the pop-leaning "Life of the Party." Their fifth straight Top Ten entry, the record's polished pop approach sparked debate, prompting the band to pursue a stylistic adjustment afterward.
The upbeat standalone single "Everything Is Fine" arrived in 2018 as an early indicator of their eighth album, which emerged in early 2020. Wake Up, Sunshine marked a return to pop-punk after the 2017 pop excursion, incorporating guest spots from blackbear and the Band Camino; it topped Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart, supported by singles such as "Some Kind of Disaster" and "Monster," the latter reissued in December 2020 with Demi Lovato's vocals. In 2021 the band collaborated with English indie rockers Pale Waves on the single "PMA," followed by the 2022 track "Sleepwalking," which appeared on their ninth album, Tell Me I'm Alive, released in 2023. Later that year they joined Avril Lavigne for the standalone single "Fake as Hell," which previewed their participation in her Greatest Hits tour throughout 2024. That November All Time Low issued The Forever Sessions Vol. 1, marking their twentieth anniversary with re-recordings of key tracks including "Dear Maria, Count Me In."
