Originating from the late-'90s alternative rock tradition fused with emocore's pop sensibilities, A Rocket to the Moon took shape in 2006 in Braintree, Massachusetts. The project essentially belonged to Nick Santino, who launched it as a solo effort and spent two years recording every instrument himself. Following the release of two independent albums, Santino joined Fueled by Ramen, where he toured alongside the label's emo-pop roster and simultaneously recruited additional musicians to perform the songs live. This shift converted the act into a complete band, which issued its first proper album, On Your Side, in October 2009. Four tracks from that record later appeared in fresh arrangements on the Rainy Day Sessions EP, with Larkin Poe contributing to every song. A Rocket to the Moon resurfaced in 2013 with the country-tinged Wild & Free.
