Formed during the closing years of the 1990s, the Maryland pop-punk band Good Charlotte reached a broad audience in 2002 when raucous tracks “The Anthem” and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” from their second album, The Young and the Hopeless, became radio staples. Drawing from the influence of Minor Threat, Rancid, and Green Day, the five-piece act captured widespread attention on MTV through energetic, defiant clips that translated into crossover appeal across pop and rock formats, a momentum sustained by later international Top Ten releases The Chronicles of Life and Death in 2004 and Good Morning Revival in 2007. With members entering fatherhood and the surrounding music landscape shifting, the group settled into its position as scene veterans during the late 2010s, contributing to the pop-punk nostalgia wave via Youth Authority in 2016 and Generation Rx in 2018. They opened the 2020s by teaming with emerging artists Yung Pinch and Goody Grace while also issuing their own track “Last December.”

Twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden established the band in 1996. A Beastie Boys concert on the 1995 Ill Communication tour prompted the siblings to recruit fellow high-school classmates and create a sound that merged the high-energy drive of 1970s punk with the melodic introspection of mainstream corporate rock. Good Charlotte took shape with Joel Madden on lead vocals and Benji Madden on lead guitar; Paul Thomas handled bass and Aaron Escolopio played drums, while Billy Martin later joined on second guitar.

Although the members originated from suburban Waldorf, Maryland, Good Charlotte quickly gained traction in nearby Washington, D.C., appearing at the WHFS annual rock event HFStival in both 1998 and 1999. The following year the group delivered its lively self-titled debut on Epic, and the single “Little Things” registered modest attention. The Madden brothers secured roles as MTV VJs and soon appeared regularly on the network’s late-night program All Things Rock, elevating the band’s visibility. While writing material for their next record, Escolopio departed to join his brother’s project Wakefield, leading the band to enlist Josh Freese as a temporary drummer before Chris Wilson assumed the role permanently. By autumn 2002 Good Charlotte readied The Young and the Hopeless, and an eager audience responded; “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “Anthem” propelled the act into mainstream recognition in 2003, eventually earning the album triple-platinum certification, while co-headlining dates with New Found Glory on the third annual Honda Civic Tour proved equally successful.

Good Charlotte returned in 2004 with The Chronicles of Life and Death, which reached number three on the Billboard charts yet sold less than its predecessor. Wilson exited in mid-2005 for health-related reasons and subsequently joined the Summer Obsession; Dean Butterworth, previously behind the kit for Morrissey and others, came aboard in time for recording sessions held in Vancouver to avoid media scrutiny, particularly surrounding Joel Madden’s relationship with Hilary Duff at the time. The stylistically diverse Good Morning Revival surfaced in late March 2007, led by the single “The River” featuring M. Shadows and Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold.

In 2009 the members announced plans to return to the studio and reclaim their punk foundation. Their fifth album, Cardiology, arrived in 2010, peaked at number 31, and preceded an extended hiatus. The Madden Brothers issued the soft-rock side project Greetings from California in 2014 before reconvening Good Charlotte for Youth Authority in 2016. December 2017 brought a tribute cover of late rapper Lil Peep’s “Awful Things,” followed by the full-length Generation Rx in September 2018. Produced by Benji Madden and Zakk Cervini, the album performed more strongly in Europe and Australia than in the United States, entering the U.K. Top 40 and yielding singles “Actual Pain” and “Prayers.”

Entering a new decade, the band first collaborated with Yung Pinch and Goody Grace on “Hanging with Ghosts” before releasing their own single “Last December” toward the close of 2020.
