Biography
Twin Atlantic, a Glasgow-based Scottish alternative rock group incorporating emo and power pop influences, came together in 2009 and achieved widespread recognition in 2011 via their gold-certified second album, Free. With Sam McTrusty and Ross McNae at its core, the ensemble has sustained chart presence in the U.K. for more than ten years through well-regarded releases such as The Great Divide in 2014, GLA in 2016, Power in 2020, and Transparency in 2022, balancing emotional intensity with grandeur.
Formed in Glasgow during 2007 by Sam McTrusty, Ross McNae, Barry McKenna, and Craig Kneale, the quartet draws from the stadium-filling, radio-friendly alt-pop style of Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, and fellow Scottish act Biffy Clyro. Their debut Vivarium appeared in 2010, succeeded by the number-one Free in 2011. In 2012, invitations to America's Vans Warped Tour preceded U.K. opening slots for blink-182.
Mid-2014 saw the launch of their third effort, The Great Divide, which featured their most successful single yet, "Heart and Soul." Much of 2015 involved appearances at prominent U.K. festivals like Glastonbury and T in the Park. Work commenced on a fourth album in 2016; GLA emerged that September and entered the U.K. album charts at position nine. Following the revealing single "Novocaine," the band issued their fifth record, Power, in January 2020, drawing inspiration from "colours, moods, and memories."
Craig Kneale opted to "step back" from the lineup in 2021, positioning McTrusty and McNae as the only remaining founders. Later that year brought the single "One Man Party," featured on Transparency, their sixth album, out in early 2022. Primarily composed by McTrusty, this effort shifted toward a lo-fi electro-rock aesthetic. Regaining the ability to create together as a unit allowed them to revive the vitality of their initial work, culminating in the 2024 release Meltdown.
