Originating from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England, Nothing But Thieves craft intense, guitar-driven rock that merges indie experimentation with accessible pop appeal. The band secured three Top Ten placements on the U.K. Albums Chart via their 2015 self-titled debut, the 2017 follow-up Broken Machine, and 2020’s Moral Panic. Building on the momentum of the latter, they issued the companion EP Moral Panic II before claiming the top spot on the U.K. Albums Chart in 2023 with Dead Club City.

The group came together in 2012 around vocalist Conor Mason, guitarists Joe Langridge-Brown and Dominic Craik, bassist Philip Blake, and drummer James Price. Initial notice arrived through early EPs, notably 2013’s If You Don’t Believe, It Can’t Hurt You and 2014’s Graveyard Whistling. Their 2015 debut album Nothing But Thieves introduced the singles “Itch,” “Hanging,” and “Trip Switch,” the last of which ascended to number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and helped the record enter the Top 15 of the Alternative, Heatseekers, and Rock Album tallies.

Following extensive roadwork, the band resurfaced in spring 2017 with “Amsterdam” as the first single from their second album. Broken Machine landed in September, reaching number two in the U.K. while also registering on the Billboard 200. In 2018 they unveiled covers of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Jeff Buckley’s “Lover, You Should Have Come Over,” then released the EP What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way? The 2020 single “Is Everybody Going Crazy?” preceded the arrival of Moral Panic, which peaked at number three on the U.K. chart. A companion release, Moral Panic II, appeared in 2021 and featured the streaming success “Futureproof.” The band also supplied “Life’s Coming in Slow” for the 2022 game Gran Turismo 7. They opened 2023 with “Welcome to the DCC,” which featured on Dead Club City and led the U.K. Albums Chart, later spawning the follow-up single “Overcome.”
