Biography
California quintet Young the Giant blends the varied heritages of its members into a global fusion of sunlit indie pop and expansive stadium rock. Formed initially as the Jakes, the group surged into mainstream visibility in 2010 upon issuing its first full-length under the new name, an effort that spawned the RIAA gold-certified singles “My Body” and “Cough Syrup.” Later releases Mind Over Matter and Home of the Strange refined the ensemble’s distinctive yet approachable modern-rock approach. Both sets reached the Billboard 200’s upper tier and established the band as a presence on radio and at festivals, including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Lollapalooza. Mirror Master, issued in 2018, entered the Top Ten of the Rock Albums chart, while the 2022 four-part Acts EP series coalesced into the fifth album, American Bollywood.
The musicians first convened as Young the Giant in Irvine, California, where vocalists Sameer Gadhia, guitarists Jacob Tilley and Eric Cannata, bassist Payam Doostzadeh, and drummer François Comtois crossed paths in high school. After graduation they abandoned prior projects to concentrate on a single outfit. Though most soon departed Orange County for separate colleges, they kept composing together and eventually paused their studies to prioritize the band. The move paid off quickly: by early 2009 they were supporting Kings of Leon and performing at South by Southwest, leading to a contract with Roadrunner Records several months later.
In January 2010 the group adopted its current moniker and entered Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles with producer Joe Chiccarelli. The resulting self-titled debut, featuring appearances by My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster and Jellyfish’s Roger Manning, surfaced digitally on Roadrunner that year; physical copies reached most markets only the following summer. Extensive television exposure, highlighted by a slot on the MTV Video Music Awards, drove the album and its singles onto charts in the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Italy.
Work on a sophomore album began in summer 2013 alongside producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen. The denser Mind Over Matter appeared in January 2014 after the band moved to Fueled by Ramen, a Warner subsidiary, and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. Two years of intensive touring followed. In April 2016 the lead single “Amerika” introduced the third album, Home of the Strange, a reflective set exploring the members’ immigrant backgrounds and broader notions of American identity; it reached number twelve on the Billboard 200. Singles “Simplify” and “Superposition” preceded the 2018 release Mirror Master, which again placed inside the Rock Albums chart’s Top Ten.
July 2022 brought Act 1: Origins, the opening installment of four EPs—followed by Exile, Battle, and Denouement—that together formed the fifth album, American Bollywood. The project recounted a “multi-generational saga of the American immigrant” drawn from Gadhia’s South Asian lineage and yielded the singles “Wake Up” and the U.S. Alternative Top 20 hit “The Walk Home.”
