Their panoramic pop/rock arrangements and choirboy vocals first drew attention in Melbourne, where the group earned early local notice through a March 2006 appearance at St. Jerome's Laneway Festival. That year they also issued a debut EP, after which interest in the band quickly reached listeners abroad. Veteran British producer Jim Abbiss, previously behind the Arctic Monkeys' first record, recognized enough potential to travel to Australia, assemble the musicians at Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios, and shape their debut album Conditions for release in 2009.

Issued that September, the U2-styled anthem "Sweet Disposition" became the band's initial single. It reached the Top 40 across several countries and featured on the Zooey Deschanel film (500) Days of Summer, boosting their profile in the United States. The Temper Trap answered with extensive touring that included slots at Glastonbury and Bonnaroo, while simultaneously inviting assorted DJs, producers, and bands to rework tracks from the debut. Those efforts yielded Conditions Remixed, which surfaced amid the group's 2010 fall dates.

Two years afterward they unveiled their self-titled sophomore album, produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, Goldfrapp) and anchored by the singles "Need Your Love" and "Trembling Hands." The platinum-certified set topped the Australian charts and secured two 2012 ARIA Awards, one of them for Best Rock Album.

During early sessions for the next record in 2013, guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto departed, prompting keyboardist/guitarist Joseph Greer to take over all principal guitar responsibilities. The Temper Trap resurfaced in 2016 with the full-length Thick as Thieves, shaped by producer Damian Taylor (Björk, Arcade Fire, the Killers).
