Biography
Arriving well after Brit-pop had faded, the Kooks brought a sharp, melodic guitar-driven energy to listeners a generation removed from that earlier wave. Their first album, Inside In/Inside Out, surfaced in 2006 alongside the Arctic Monkeys’ opening release. Though the two acts competed in a mild rivalry, their concurrent arrivals marked the start of a fresh cohort of British guitar outfits equally shaped by the Strokes and by longstanding rock traditions. Inside In/Inside Out became a major U.K. success, climbing to number two and eventually earning quadruple-platinum certification. The 2008 follow-up Konk entered the British album chart at number one yet descended rapidly thereafter. Junk of the Heart, issued in 2011, failed to restore their commercial momentum, yet the group persisted and resurfaced in 2014 with Listen, an album that expanded their palette to include soul, dance, and new wave while still honoring the classic British pop and rock that had always anchored their style. The Kooks kept pairing expansive grooves with polished production on the later releases Let's Go Sunshine (2017) and 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark (2022).
The band’s story began in 2004 when vocalist/guitarist Luke Pritchard, guitarist Hugh Harris, bassist Max Rafferty, and drummer Paul Garred assembled at Brighton Music College. Discovering shared musical affinities, they borrowed their name from a track on David Bowie’s Hunky Dory and cut a demo that, together with a series of early shows, quickly drew attention from multiple record labels. Just four months after forming, they secured a deal with Virgin Records. Their debut, Inside In/Inside Out, was tracked in 2005. The singles “Eddie's Gun” and “Sofa Song” surfaced throughout that year, and the album itself arrived in January 2006. It opened at number nine on the U.K. charts before rising to number two; “You Don't Love Me” reached number twelve while “Naïve” and “She Moves in Her Own Way” both entered the U.K. Top Ten. These tracks propelled Inside In/Inside Out to quadruple-platinum status domestically, though its October American release generated limited response, in contrast to stronger platinum-certified sales in Australia.
While preparing their second album in early 2008, the band parted ways with bassist Rafferty; Dan Logan, formerly of Cat the Dog, stepped in temporarily. Konk, titled after the studio owned by the Kinks’ Ray Davies where it was recorded, emerged amid the upheaval in April 2008. It topped the U.K. charts and reached number forty-one in the United States, yet ultimately underperformed relative to the debut; only the lead single “Always Where I Need to Be” cracked the Top Ten, and the album later received gold certification in the U.K. By year’s end Peter Denton had joined on bass. During 2009 sessions for the third album, drummer Garred exited; the group auditioned several stand-ins before settling on Alexis Nunez. Garred completed his contributions to Junk of the Heart, which reunited the band with original producer Tony Hoffer.
Junk of the Heart presented a smoother sound that failed to translate into strong sales, entering the British charts at number ten without generating any hit singles. Recognizing the need for a shift, the Kooks enlisted London hip-hop producer Inflo to oversee 2014’s Listen, their first album to feature Nunez on drums. The resulting set incorporated pronounced dance, soul, and electronic elements while retaining pop foundations. Released worldwide in September 2014, it debuted at number sixteen in the U.K. and number eighty-five in the U.S. In 2017 the band launched an extensive “best-of” tour tied to the career-spanning compilation The Best Of... So Far. The following year they delivered their fifth studio album, Let's Go Sunshine, which included the singles “No Pressure” and “All the Time.” To mark the release they performed at London’s Moth Club; the show was recorded and issued for Record Store Day 2019. Around this period bassist Denton departed, with Peter Randall filling the role on tour. The single “Got Your Number” appeared in May of that year. After COVID-19 suspended live activity, the group resumed touring in 2021, now with Jonathan Harvey on bass. For their sixth album Pritchard sought a European sensibility shaped in part by the touring complications Brexit created for British acts on the continent. Traveling to Berlin, Pritchard and the others absorbed the city’s atmosphere while collaborating with local producer Tobias Kuhn. The material first appeared as three separate EPs in early 2022 before being collected on the album 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark.
