The Subways fused punk's aggressive guitars and defiant stance with pop's memorable hooks and choruses plus the theatrical bravado of Brit-pop, launching as teenage outsiders on the British scene before developing into a more refined unit that retained its energetic character. Billy Lunn on guitar and vocals joined forces with Charlotte Cooper on bass and vocals to launch the group, which was still navigating its influences across the 2006 debut Young for Eternity yet achieved greater cohesion and precision on 2008's All or Nothing. Themes of a personal nature surfaced on the self-titled 2015 release without eroding its sharpness, and following lineup shifts the band returned with the sleek and exuberant Uncertain Joys in 2023.

Formed in 2000 in Welwyn Garden City within Hertfordshire, England, the Subways originated when guitarist and vocalist Billy Lunn and his brother, drummer Josh Morgan, passed hours at a local subway station discussing music before committing to start a band. Lunn adopted his mother's maiden name for performing while both siblings, still in early adolescence, rehearsed at home with material from Nirvana, Green Day and additional punk and alternative acts alongside selections from their parents' collection such as the Beatles, T. Rex, AC/DC and the Carpenters. An Oasis television broadcast spurred Lunn toward greater focus on his guitar playing, after which an encounter with Charlotte Cooper revealed her familiarity with Mudhoney, the Pixies and the Jam. She became his girlfriend and the band's bassist under the initial name Mustardseed, which soon changed to Platypus as they performed at area rock venues and distributed live tapes and demos of original material. By constructing a basic home studio instead of booking professional time, the group accumulated numerous rough tracks from the brothers' former subway gathering spot before adopting the name the Subways. In 2004, after learning that another act recording at the home studio planned to enter the Glastonbury Festival's Unsigned Performers Competition, the Subways submitted an entry as well, winning the contest and securing a slot at the prominent British event that drew industry attention.

Additional festival appearances and a lengthy UK tour established their strength as live performers, leading to a deal with Infectious Records. Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds produced the debut Young for Eternity, issued in June 2005, with Reprise handling the North American release in February 2006. Exposure on The O.C. boosted visibility in the United States, where the single "Rock & Roll Queen" achieved gold status. The band headed to California to work on the follow-up with producer and Garbage co-founder Butch Vig, during a period when Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper's relationship was ending; the resulting 2008 album All or Nothing channeled that tension into a tougher mainstream-rock direction. It reached number 17 on the British charts and yielded the singles "Girls & Boys" and "Alright." After parting ways with Infectious Records and Reprise, the Subways used Pledge Music to crowd-fund their third album, 2011's Money and Celebrity, produced by Stephen Street, known for collaborations with the Smiths and Blur, and released via the independent British label Cooking Vinyl. Subsequent touring covered the UK and Europe before work began on the next project in 2014. Entirely recorded and mixed by Lunn, The Subways appeared in February 2015, though supporting dates encountered disruption when Josh Morgan temporarily departed due to stage fright. His return after several weeks preceded a stretch of lower activity that included the 2016 digital EP Acoustic Adventures at YFE Studios, with no new material until the 2021 single "Fight." That track introduced the fifth album Uncertain Joys, issued in January 2023 with a stronger pop orientation. At the time of release Josh Morgan had permanently exited citing family matters, and Camille Phillips, previously of the Ramonas, took his place.
