The Sunshine Underground emerged in the early 2000s with an angular, beat-driven style that echoed Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs, launching their live career through local appearances across the Leeds region. All four members had previously attended secondary school in Shropshire, the southwestern English county bordering Wales, with Craig Wellington studying in Shrewsbury while Stuart Jones, Daley Smith, and Matthew Gwilt attended institutions in Telford. After Gwilt secured a place at the University of Leeds, the group relocated to the city following their secondary education and promptly formed the band, taking their name from a Chemical Brothers recording.

During this period they cultivated key music-industry connections, including an introduction to the “scene fixer” associated with ¡Forward, Russia!, who booked several of the Sunshine Underground’s earliest performances. Nationwide recognition arrived in 2005 when the quartet triumphed in Fresh Meat, BBC-1’s popular battle-of-the-bands contest. Their debut single, “Put You in Your Place,” appeared on the City Rockers imprint that July, followed in 2006 by “Commercial Breakdown” and, several months later, the full-length album Raise the Alarm on the same label. That August the earlier single climbed to number 39 on the UK Top 40.
