Biography
Originating in Sweden, the alternative electro-pop/rock trio Miike Snow specializes in crafting catchy, exuberant, and rhythm-driven tracks. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2009, followed by international chart success with Happy to You in 2012 and iii in 2016, the latter yielding the platinum-certified Billboard alternative smash "Genghis Khan." Although the group maintained a presence at scattered festivals in subsequent years, eight years passed before fresh material surfaced with the pulsing 2024 single "I Was a Sailor."
The Stockholm-based outfit consists of writer/producers Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, and Andrew Wyatt. At the time of formation, Karlsson and Winnberg had already established themselves as the production duo Bloodshy & Avant, collaborating with numerous global pop figures in the early 2000s such as Britney Spears, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Ms. Dynamite. Their most prominent credit, the production of Spears' 2004 chart-topping blockbuster "Toxic," earned a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2005. Based in New York City, Wyatt had previously worked with Black Beetle alongside Joan Wasser and with the A.M. alongside Michael Tighe; he also served as an in-house producer for Downtown Records, handling acts including Spank Rock and Amanda Blank, and belonged to Fires of Rome, whose debut full-length You Kingdom You appeared in 2009.
Miike Snow coalesced in 2007 to unite the three musicians' skills, issuing their first commercial single, "Animal," via Downtown Records in 2009. A series of promotional MP3s circulated widely within the music blogosphere, encompassing "Animal" and "Burial" alongside remixes by DJ Mehdi, Crookers, Benny Blanco, and Treasure Fingers, plus a Miike Snow reinterpretation of the Vampire Weekend track "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance." Later that year, Downtown Records released the band's self-titled debut album, after which they embarked on a North American tour.
In 2012 the trio established the indie label Ingrid alongside Lykke Li, Dungen, and Peter Bjorn and John, then issued their sophomore album Happy to You through Downtown/Universal in March. The record achieved international placements, reaching the Top 20 in Australia, the Top 40 in the U.K., number 42 in Sweden, and number 43 on the Billboard 200. Their follow-up, iii (Downtown/Atlantic), emerged in March 2016, preceded by the singles "Heart Is Full" and "Genghis Khan," both of which charted on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally, with "Genghis Khan" peaking at number 12 across a 21-week run. The album itself returned them to Australia's Top 20, climbed to number 28 in Sweden, and reached number 47 in the United States.
After touring extensively throughout 2017 and appearing at occasional festivals in the ensuing period, a track first performed live in 2019 received studio treatment and emerged as their initial new release in eight years when "I Was a Sailor" was self-released in May 2024.
