Biography
German duo Milky Chance craft hook-driven, relaxed pop that blends elements of folk, reggae, and electronic music. Their breakthrough arrived via the 2013 debut album Sadnecessary, which featured the chart-topping single "Stolen Dance" and earned the pair two Echo Award nominations while setting the stage for the 2015 release Blossom and the 2019 album Mind the Moon. Early 2021 brought the compilation Trip Tape, followed by its sequel Trip Tape II in 2022; both collections gathered assorted covers and remixes. The band's fourth studio effort, Living in a Haze, surfaced in 2023.
Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch first connected during an advanced music class at their Kassel, Germany high school, where Rehbein handled bass duties in the jazz ensemble. The two initially performed together in a local group that disbanded after graduation, prompting them to continue as a duo. In 2013, following a pair of promising live appearances, they began recording their first album. Once complete, they posted several tracks, among them the infectious "Stolen Dance," to YouTube. The song unexpectedly exploded online, accumulating millions of views and generating sold-out concerts. Sadnecessary reached listeners through Lichtdicht Records that same year. After the album appeared on the German charts and the Billboard Top 200, the duo re-released "Stolen Dance," which then climbed rankings throughout Europe and the United States.
By 2015 Milky Chance had completed a U.S. tour and collected multiple European award nods. The following year they returned to the studio for their second album. Blossom, issued in early 2017, found the pair exploring fresh sonic territory. Mind the Moon arrived in November 2019 and included the single "Daydreaming" featuring Tash Sultana. The next decade opened with the 2020 release "Don't Let Me Down," a collaboration with singer/songwriter Jack Johnson. "Colorado" served as the lead single for the 2021 project Trip Tape, whose November release mixed remixes of earlier material with covers spanning Nirvana to the Kid LAROI. Trip Tape II followed in October 2022 and introduced the single "Troubled Man." Living in a Haze, the band's fourth full-length, came out in June 2023. Alongside the singles "Golden" and "Purple Tiger," the record showcased Fatoumata Diawara on the Afrobeat-infused "Flicker in the Dark" and Charlotte Cardin on "History of Yesterday."
