Emerging from the North Hertfordshire market town of Hitchin, James Bay sharpened his abilities through regional performances that led to high-profile support slots with Tom Odell, John Newman, and Kodaline, culminating in a 2012 recording contract with Republic/Universal. He soon tracked material that yielded the charting single "When We Were on Fire" in 2013, followed the next year by a pair of British Top Ten entries: "Let It Go," which reached number ten, and "Hold Back the River," which climbed to number two while also appearing on charts in ten additional countries. His debut full-length, Chaos and the Calm, arrived in March 2015, allowing him to perform select U.S. shows that included sets at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The album topped the U.K. and Ireland charts and entered the Top 20 in the United States.

Bluesy English singer/songwriter James Bay shapes heartfelt and atmospheric folk-pop through his warm, raspy delivery. Capitalizing on the platinum-certified hit single "Hold Back the River," the 2015 release Chaos and the Calm marked a major breakthrough by ascending to number one in the U.K. and reaching the Top Ten throughout Europe and Australasia. He brought renewed stylistic touches to his 2018 sophomore album, Electric Light, which rose to number two. The 2019 EP Oh My Messy Mind included the track "Peer Pressure" featuring Julia Michaels, while his third album, Leap, sustained strong momentum by landing inside the U.K. Top Five in 2022. Over the ensuing two years he issued the emotionally charged single "Goodbye Never Felt So Bad" and the 2024 collaboration "Up All Night" with Noah Kahan and the Lumineers, both of which appeared on his fourth long-player, Changes All the Time.

During 2016 Bay received a Brit Award for Best British Male Solo Artist along with Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song for "Hold Back the River." He resurfaced in 2018 via the emotive single "Wild Love," which featured on Electric Light and showcased an evolved approach marked by polished production and experimental elements. The following year he released "Peer Pressure" with American singer Julia Michaels; the song and three additional tracks formed that year's Oh My Messy Mind EP. Bay continued with the upbeat 2020 single "Chew on My Heart" and early 2022's "Give Me the Reason," the latter appearing on Leap. That album, recorded between Nashville and London and released in July 2022, featured production and songwriting contributions from Dave Cobb, Foy Vance, Ian Fitchuk, Joel Little, and Finneas before peaking at number four in the U.K.

A pair of lovelorn singles, "Goodbye Never Felt So Bad" and "All My Broken Pieces," defined his 2023 output. The rowdier 2024 track "Up All Night," a notable collaboration with Noah Kahan and the Lumineers, served as the lead single for Changes All the Time. Gabe Simon produced the album, which included co-writes by the Killers' Brandon Flowers, Holly Humberstone, and Dan Wilson of Semisonic.
