Biography
With an intimate sound shaped by folk traditions, Mike Rosenberg—known professionally as Passenger—has cultivated a devoted audience through consistent recognition and strong chart showings. Born in Brighton, England, in 1984 to an English mother and American father, he began classical guitar lessons and composed original material during his early teenage years. At sixteen he left school to chase a music career, spending several years performing on the streets in both England and Australia. After connecting with multi-instrumentalist and producer Andrew Phillips in 2002, the pair assembled the group Passenger, adding bassist Marcus O'Dair, keyboardist Richard Brincklow, and drummer Alon Cohen. Their full-length debut, Wicked Man's Rest, appeared in 2007 and included the single “Walk You Home.” That same year the band supported high-profile indie acts such as Kate Nash and the Hold Steady across the U.K., while the following year they contributed music to the film Where Have I Been All Your Life? and played at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
When Phillips departed in 2009, Rosenberg retained the Passenger name for his solo work. The resulting sophomore release, Wide Eyes Blind Love, adopted a spare acoustic approach that matched his new direction. A “fan-only” project, Divers and Submarines, followed in 2010, as did Flight of the Crow, which featured guest appearances by Josh Pyke, Katie Noonan, Elana Stone, and additional artists. Rosenberg’s fifth studio album, All the Little Lights, arrived in 2012 with a richer, more expansive production. Although issued that summer, the track “Let Her Go” did not achieve widespread success until 2013, when it reached number one in sixteen territories, among them Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, and Belgium. The song also climbed to the top of the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, earned a Brit Award nomination for British Single of the Year, and secured the Ivor Novello Award for Most Performed Work.
Work on the next record, Whispers, began in late 2013 with returning co-producer Chris Vallejo. Released in 2014, the album spawned the singles “Scare Away the Dark” and “Heart’s On Fire,” reached number two in Australia and number five in England, and landed at number twelve on the Billboard 200. A companion set, Whispers II, emerged the next year, with all proceeds directed to UNICEF U.K.’s efforts in Liberia. In 2016 Rosenberg issued Young as the Morning Old as the Sea, again collaborating with Vallejo and a fresh ensemble of musicians; the project topped the U.K. chart and placed inside the top ten in numerous other countries. At the close of an extensive tour in summer 2017 he surprised listeners with The Boy Who Cried Wolf on his own Black Crow Records label, which peaked at number five in the U.K. The 2018 album Runaway celebrated his American roots through Americana stylings and included the single “Hell or High Water,” promoted via a three-week cross-country road trip that yielded acoustic performance videos filmed at evocative locations. In 2019 he released the string-quartet-accompanied acoustic collection Sometimes It’s Something, Sometimes It’s Nothing at All, donating all proceeds to the U.K. homelessness charity Shelter.
After a breakup, Rosenberg returned to Brighton and channeled the experience into writing and recording. The resulting eight-song set Patchwork served as the foundation for his thirteenth studio album, Songs for the Drunk & Broken Hearted, which appeared in early 2021 even though it had been completed before the U.K. COVID-19 lockdown. His fourteenth long-player, Birds That Flew and Ships That Sailed, followed in 2022. Self-financed and issued through Black Crow Records, the ten-track collection explored themes of human impermanence and the passage of time.
