Australian-born adult alternative singer/songwriter Dean Lewis crafts emotionally exposed, yearning compositions that echo the style of peers including Jamie Lawson, Ed Sheeran, and Lewis Capaldi. He surfaced during the final years of the 2010s and first reached worldwide audiences via the multi-platinum, multi-billion-stream single “Be Alright,” which appeared on his debut full-length studio album, A Place We Knew, issued in 2019. His second LP, The Hardest Love, arrived in 2022 and again proved successful, climbing to number four in Australia while yielding the deeply felt global hit “How Do I Say Goodbye.” Further partnerships with Julia Michaels and Ruth B. took shape as he prepared his next release, incorporating the ballads “The Last Bit of Us” and the heartfelt “Trust Me Mate” on the more acoustic third album The Epilogue, released in 2024.

Raised in Sydney, Lewis learned guitar on his own during his formative years by playing along with Oasis recordings and began composing original material, gradually building a substantial catalog of self-written songs. He stayed largely out of the spotlight for an extended period, quietly completing more than eighty originals before issuing his first official single, “Waves,” in 2016. That track became a major domestic success and earned platinum certification in Australia within twelve months. Early the following year he released “Need You Now,” then delivered his debut EP, Same Kind of Different, in May 2017; the project showcased moody, evocative pop that encompassed the two preceding singles plus four additional tracks sharing the same dark yet melodic approach.

The wistful single “Be Alright” surfaced in 2018, followed in early 2019 by the nostalgic “7 Minutes.” By the time A Place We Knew appeared that March, “Be Alright” had already surpassed one billion streams worldwide. The album reached number 31 on the Billboard 200 and captured Album of the Year, Best Male Artist, and Song of the Year honors at the 2019 ARIAs. In 2021 Lewis issued the introspective “Falling Up” and the driving “Looks Like Me,” the latter serving as the first preview of his upcoming sophomore effort. He continued rolling out material in 2022, unveiling “Hurtless” in March; the song arrived with a video featuring Irish actors Frank Blake and Stephanie Dufresne and surpassed ten million streams within a month. These releases paved the way for the September 2022 arrival of The Hardest Love, which debuted at number four in Australia. Its third single, “How Do I Say Goodbye,” was written for Lewis’ father after a cancer diagnosis; the poignant track achieved global success and attained double-platinum status at home.

During 2023 Lewis joined American singer Julia Michaels for the hopeful anthem “In a Perfect World.” After issuing his own ballad “Trust Me Mate,” he collaborated with Canadian singer/songwriter Ruth B. on the song “28.” He maintained a ballad-focused direction with the 2024 singles “Memories” and “The Last Bit of Us,” which launched the cycle for his next album. Issued in October 2024, the third LP The Epilogue reduced the production sheen of its predecessor and returned to the more acoustic sound of his debut.
