Biography
Emerging toward the end of the 2000s, Jack Savoretti achieved prominence with an introspective acoustic pop approach that drew as readily from classic 1970s singer-songwriters as from the genre’s newer voices appearing near the millennium’s start. The British musician’s initial releases benefited from strategic placements in television and film, among them One Tree Hill and Sons of Anarchy. Moving into the following decade, Savoretti teamed with leading European hitmakers for projects such as Before the Storm (2012) and Written in Scars (2014). Influences from his Italian father surfaced more clearly on subsequent outings, notably 2019’s Singing to Strangers, tracked at famed composer Ennio Morricone’s Rome studio. He further explored disco textures on the 2021 Nile Rodgers-produced Europiana.
Of Italian and English heritage, Savoretti received his first guitar and encouragement to compose from his mother, a model who had spent time with Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones during the 1960s. His debut single, “Without,” appeared in late 2006. A modest BBC Radio 2 success, it drew the notice of Corinne Bailey Rae, who invited him onto her European tour that same year. His first full-length release, Between the Minds, arrived in 2007 and reached the U.K. Top 100. An inaugural solo tour began in early 2008, after which the debut album was reissued with an added acoustic bonus disc.
Savoretti cultivated an American following once several songs appeared in films and series, including One Tree Hill. Though his second album, 2009’s Harder Than Easy, was captured with an exceptional ensemble featuring musicians from Tom Waits’ band and Counting Crows and mixed by Grammy winner Jack Joseph Puig, promotion fell short of expectations, with only a U.S. digital rollout. After parting from his label and management, he nearly abandoned music until fresh songwriting inspiration prompted a third collection. The outcome, 2012’s Before the Storm, shaped by Swedish hit factory the Suppliers and completed inside four days, earned broadly favorable reviews and revived his trajectory.
In 2014 Savoretti signed with major label BMG for the first time and commenced work on a fourth album. Issued early the next year, Written in Scars was co-written with Sam Dixon and Matt Benbrook—whose prior credits encompass Adele, Sia, Paolo Nutini, Jake Bugg, and Faithless—and reflected Savoretti’s initial engagement with the 1960s and 1970s Italian pop his father had favored. Reuniting with the same collaborators, he delivered his fifth album, Sleep No More, just a year later. For the subsequent record, 2019’s Singing to Strangers, Savoretti relocated to Ennio Morricone’s Rome studio, recording beneath a church to heighten the atmosphere. Seeking further sonic expansion, he enlisted Nile Rodgers for his seventh studio effort, 2021’s Europiana, incorporating disco elements throughout.
