Kodaline first appeared under the name 21 Demands before unveiling their music in 2012, drawing on the expansive, airwave-friendly guitar-driven style associated with Coldplay, Keane, U2, and Oasis. Their platinum-certified debut album, In a Perfect World, arrived that same year and brought immediate commercial breakthrough, after which the group maintained chart dominance at home with the later releases Coming Up for Air in 2015, Politics of Living in 2018, and One Day at a Time in 2020.

The quartet came together in Swords, a working-class community in Ireland, built around Steve Garrigan, Vinnie May, Jr., Jason Boland, and Mark Prendergast. They put out a self-titled EP in 2012 while preparing a full-length project for the year ahead. By the close of 2012 the band had earned a place on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 shortlist, although HAIM ultimately claimed the number-one position. June 2013 saw the arrival of In a Perfect World, introduced by the advance singles “High Hopes” and “Love Like This.” The album achieved double-platinum status in Ireland, reached number three and earned gold certification in Britain, and found strong reception across parts of Europe.

Early 2015 brought the follow-up Coming Up for Air, which climbed to number four on the U.K. charts and yielded the singles “The One” and “Honest.” Summer 2017 marked the band’s return via the track “Brother” alongside the I Wouldn't Be EP. The subsequent year they released “Follow Your Fire,” a song that appeared on the more pop-oriented Politics of Living and once again topped the Irish album chart. Continued activity included the concert recording Live from Irving Plaza, NYC, 4 Dec 2018, followed in 2020 by the more intimate, back-to-basics fourth album One Day at a Time, which bassist Boland handled himself. In 2022 the band delivered their second live collection, Our Roots Run Deep, captured earlier that year at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre.
