Biography
A versatile performer rooted in Irish folk-pop traditions, Lisa Hannigan has built a career as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and occasional voice actor. Recognition first arrived through her longstanding vocal partnership with Damien Rice, after which she launched her independent path in 2008 via the Mercury Prize-nominated debut Sea Sew. Further praise followed with the 2011 release Passenger and the 2016 album At Swim, the latter preserving her folk foundations while opening toward a broader pop palette.
The pair first crossed paths in 2001 at a Dublin concert, after which she joined the former Juniper frontman’s solo ensemble. Her contributions included distinctive vocals on the albums O and 9, alongside instrumental work on guitar, keyboards, and drums. Live sets occasionally featured her own material, traditional songs, or covers. On March 26, 2007, Rice ended the collaboration, declaring that the partnership “has run its creative course.” Undeterred, Hannigan turned to her own catalog, gradually posting demos online. She joined Jason Mraz’s 2008 tour across the United States and Canada, and Sea Sew appeared in Ireland that same year, reaching American listeners in early 2009. The album attained double-platinum status in Ireland, where her whimsical folk-pop approach and understated vocal style resonated with both reviewers and audiences. Similar ground was explored on Passenger, produced by Joe Henry and again widely acclaimed at home and abroad. After two years of touring and a voice role as Blue Diamond in the animated series Steven Universe, she encountered a prolonged period of writer’s block. At Swim emerged in 2016, recorded with the National’s Aaron Dessner and marked by a more expansive pop sensibility. Her first live album, Live in Dublin, followed in 2019, captured at the National Concert Hall with the contemporary classical ensemble s t a r g a z e.
