Biography
MisterWives surfaced from New York City during the mid-2010s, channeling a buoyant indie-pop style that shifted between offbeat synth-fueled dance tracks, expansive indie-folk textures, and other eclectic directions. Their catchy 2014 release “Reflections” quickly established them, leading to two Billboard-charting full-lengths issued on Photo Finish. A short stint with Fueled by Ramen produced the expansive 2020 effort Superbloom; afterward the band started its own imprint and issued further singles including 2021’s “Stepped on a Bee” and 2022’s “Dreams.” Their fourth album, Nosebleeds, appeared in 2023 and revealed a sharper, post-punk orientation.
The group coalesced in 2012 around the central trio of vocalist and keyboardist Mandy Lee, bassist William Hehir, and drummer Etienne Bowler, crafting a distinctive blend of synth-pop, folk, and indie-rock elements anchored by Lee’s agile vocal lines. Once guitarist Marc Campbell, keyboardist Mike Murphy, and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Blum joined, they tracked their first EP, Reflections, which Photo Finish Records put out in early 2014. Despite having only that EP and scattered demos available, the band generated considerable attention before delivering their first LP, Our Own House, in February 2015. The record succeeded immediately, reaching number 31 on the Billboard 200 largely because of “Reflections” and the lead single “Our Own House.”
Following an extensive 2016 run of dates supporting Panic! At the Disco, MisterWives resurfaced in 2017 with their sophomore album Connect the Dots, which, though less commercially dominant than its predecessor, still debuted at number 19 on the Billboard Alternative chart and landed inside the Top 200. In 2019 they signed with Fueled by Ramen, which issued the expansive third album Superbloom in July 2020; although it did not chart, the title track accumulated millions of streams.
The label parted ways with the band in 2021, prompting MisterWives to proceed independently with the single “Stepped on a Bee” after Blum’s departure. Operating again under Photo Finish, they established the Resilient Little Records imprint to release 2022 tracks such as “Dreams” and “Where Do We Go from Here.” Two additional songs, “Out of Your Mind” and “Nosebleeds,” surfaced in March and May of 2023, introducing a more assertive, post-punk-tinged approach. The latter became the title track of the band’s fourth album, Nosebleeds, released that July.
