Chicago pop/punk band Showoff put out a single Maverick album and laid down an unreleased follow-up before three members quit in 2002, leaving only the vocalist behind. The departing trio formed the Fold, and although that early configuration proved short-lived, the group name endured. When the Fold inked a deal with Tooth & Nail Records in March 2005, its roster featured the lone Showoff survivor, Daniel Castady—who had traded his Showoff drum kit for lead vocals and guitar—plus guitarist Aaron Green, bassist Keith Mochel, and drummer Mark Rhoades, each of whom had previously played in assorted local acts. Drawing on Far and Saves the Day for their Christian-themed pop/rock approach, the Fold issued their first full-length, This Too Shall Pass, in February 2006 and spent the rest of the year touring in support with Project 86, Anberlin, and Sherwood. That road work paved the way for the May 2007 arrival of their second album, Secrets Keep You Sick.
