Biography
Toronto's FM Static emerged as a pop-punk side project featuring Thousand Foot Krutch members Trevor McNevan on vocals and guitar alongside Steve Augustine on drums. Far removed from the aggressive rap-metal style of TFK, the group instead aligned closely with the bright, hook-driven pop-punk sound associated with blink-182 and Good Charlotte. McNevan and Augustine brought in bassist Justin Smith and guitarist John Bunner to complete the lineup, then delivered the band's Tooth & Nail debut in July 2003, an eleven-track collection of upbeat songs centered on girls, high school, and summertime. That autumn FM Static promoted the record across the country on tour. Three years afterward the musicians returned with Critically Ashamed. For the subsequent release the duo expanded their songwriting approach on the 2009 concept album and rock opera Dear Diary, which unfolded a story through entries in a fictional character's diary. The project succeeded commercially and introduced the band to the Billboard 200. In the year that followed, the group confirmed plans for fresh material, resulting in the 2011 release of their fourth album, My Brain Says Stop, But My Heart Says Go!.
