Skillet, an alternative Christian rock outfit, navigate the divide separating metalfest headliners from worship-band platforms by crafting forceful anthems suited to both mainstream and faith-based crowds. After gradually cultivating listeners throughout the mid-1990s, the ensemble strengthened its roster and entered the wider market in 2001 via Alien Youth, the band’s fourth album. The quartet thereafter advanced rapidly on the charts, building momentum with every new release. Awake delivered their commercial peak in 2009 by reaching number two on the Billboard 200. Rise (2013) and Unleashed (2016) sustained that momentum, drawing mixed listeners through consistently driving, riff-centered material. Victorious reclaimed the summit of the Christian Albums chart in 2019, leading into the forceful Dominion in 2022 and the cohesive Revolution in 2024.

The group originated in Memphis, Tennessee, around the core of vocalist-bassist John Cooper, guitarist Ken Steorts, and drummer Trey McClurkin. Their 1996 self-titled debut was followed in 1998 by Hey You, I Love Your Soul. Invincible arrived in early 2000, after which the original members supplied three songs to the Ardent Worship: Skillet Live collection that year. Reconfigured with Cooper handling bass and lead vocals, his spouse Korey Cooper on guitar and keyboards, Ben Kasica on guitar, and Lori Peters on drums, Skillet issued Alien Youth on Ardent Records in 2001, securing their initial Billboard 200 placement. Collide appeared in 2003; Lava/Atlantic subsequently acquired and re-released it in 2004 with an added track. The album became the band’s strongest seller to that point and earned a Grammy nomination, while Skillet toured in support alongside Saliva and Shinedown.

Comatose, their next Lava/Atlantic project, surfaced in fall 2006 and extended the upward trajectory in both chart placement and sales. Awake, however, marked their clearest breakthrough in 2009. Featuring new drummer Jen Ledger, the set led the U.S. Alternative and Christian Albums charts while climbing to number two on the Billboard 200. The singles “Monster,” “Hero,” and “Awake and Alive” each received platinum certification, and the release held the title of the band’s top seller. Rise arrived in 2013 and topped the Christian, Rock, and Hard Rock charts; Vital Signs, a compilation aimed at European audiences, followed the next year.

Unleashed, the ninth album, matched prior performance in 2016 and was augmented by the 2017 deluxe edition Unleashed Beyond, which added five tracks including “Breaking Free” with Lacey Sturm. Ledger released her self-titled solo EP in 2018 on Cooper’s Hear It Loud imprint. Korey supplied co-writing, while John contributed vocals to the single “Warrior.” Both projects continued touring before Skillet reconvened for their tenth album, Victorious. Issued in August 2019, the spiritually charged record contained “Legendary” and “Save Me.” “Surviving the Game” reached the Christian songs chart in 2021 and later appeared on Dominion, the hard-hitting yet affirming 2022 set that peaked at number two on the Christian chart and later received a deluxe version featuring the single “Psycho in My Head.” Revolution, the band’s twelfth long-player and first independent release, arrived in 2024, presenting an intense, emotionally resonant collection urging unity amid the socio-political tensions of the 2020s.
