During the initial years of the twenty-first century, Hinder started developing their bold and lively post-grunge sound in Oklahoma City, where locals Joe Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson encountered Austin Winkler performing covers at a university gathering. Together these three individuals established the core of the band Hinder, which soon secured opening slots for acts like Theory of a Deadman in the area. Subsequent personnel adjustments incorporated guitarist Mark King along with bassist Mike Rodden, enabling the five-piece ensemble to secure a deal with Universal following the release of an independently produced EP. Extreme Behavior, their debut album from 2005, ranked among the most successful releases of that period, achieving triple-platinum certification while propelling the track “Lips of an Angel” to the third position on the singles rankings. After a few years, Hinder came back with another collection of celebratory tracks titled Take It to the Limit. The year 2010 saw the arrival of All American Nightmare, which preceded the band’s fourth studio effort, Welcome to the Freakshow, in 2012. Austin Winkler departed from Hinder in 2013, prompting Jared Weeks to handle temporary vocal duties on the road; afterward the group evaluated Nolan Neal and ultimately chose Marshal Dutton as the permanent singer in 2015. When the Smoke Clears marked Dutton’s inaugural recording with Hinder. After putting out the acoustic EP Stripped in 2016, the band unveiled their sixth full-length album, The Reign, during August 2017.
