Biography
Staind emerged as a multi-platinum nu-metal outfit from New England, blending hip-hop, modern rock, and post-grunge textures under the anguished songwriting and commanding voice of frontman Aaron Lewis. The group came together in 1995 and achieved widespread recognition in 2001 with its third full-length, Break the Cycle, whose Top Five single “It’s Been Awhile” paved the way for two consecutive Billboard 200 chart-toppers: 14 Shades of Gray and Chapter V. Following the self-titled 2011 release, the band entered a period of inactivity while Lewis pursued a solo country path and guitarist Mike Mushok joined the Canadian-American supergroup Saint Asonia. In 2019 the members reconvened for live dates and later returned to recording, issuing Confessions of the Fallen in 2023.
The quartet’s origins trace to Springfield, Massachusetts, where Lewis and Mushok first crossed paths at a Christmas party in 1993. Mushok soon introduced drummer Jon Wysocki, and an early bass connection that eventually dissolved completed the initial configuration. Building an audience required persistent regional touring alongside other metal acts, which enabled the band to move more than two thousand copies of its independently released debut Tormented within roughly twelve months.
During a Hartford, Connecticut performance supporting Limp Bizkit, singer Fred Durst voiced strong disapproval of the artwork on Staind’s album. A tense exchange ensued over whether the group espoused satanic themes, after which Durst discarded the record and departed. Forty-five minutes later he returned, this time to secure contact information after being impressed by the live set. He exchanged numbers and persuaded the musicians to travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for further song development.
Once the material had been reshaped, Durst reached the head of Flip Records and secured an introduction for the band. While in Los Angeles the group laid down a three-song sampler; by February 1998 a deal was in place. After appearing on the Vans Warped Tour, Staind entered the studio with producer Terry Date—known for his work with Deftones, Pantera, and Soundgarden—to complete Dysfunction, released on April 13, 1999. Subsequent road work included dates with Kid Rock and another summer package alongside Limp Bizkit.
Break the Cycle spent an extended stretch at number one on the U.S. album chart in 2001 and earned five-times-platinum certification. The hits “It’s Been a While,” “Fade,” “For You,” and “Epiphany” propelled the band into mainstream visibility, while its 2002 MTV Unplugged album achieved gold status. In 2003 Staind delivered the Billboard 200-topping 14 Shades of Grey; after a two-year hiatus the group returned with the chart-topping Chapter V. A Singles and Videos collection appeared in 2006, followed by The Illusion of Progress in 2008, which debuted at number three. Early 2011 brought Aaron Lewis’s country-oriented solo EP Town Line. Later that September the band issued its seventh studio album, Staind, marking the exit of longtime drummer Jon Wysocki. Sal Giancarelli was soon recruited on drums, and the ensuing tour was documented on the 2012 release Live from Mohegan Sun.
That same year the members announced an indefinite break, with Lewis concentrating on his solo work and Mushok teaming with Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier, ex-Finger Eleven drummer Rich Beddoe, and Eye Empire bassist Corey Lowery to form Saint Asonia. Apart from occasional live appearances, Staind stayed largely dormant for several years. An official reunion took place in 2019, and a festival slot was planned for the following year until the Covid-19 pandemic halted progress. In 2022 the group mounted its first extensive tour in more than a decade and confirmed plans for new material. Produced by Erik Ron, whose credits include Godsmack, Panic! at the Disco, and Black Veil Brides, Confessions of the Fallen arrived in 2023, introducing electronic textures to the band’s established heavy-rock foundation.
