Biography
Originating in the modest community of Escatawpa, Mississippi, 3 Doors Down reached their commercial zenith during the 2000s through a series of post-grunge tracks, above all “Kryptonite,” “When I’m Gone,” and the reflective ballad “Here Without You.” Driven by a minor-key groove and lyrical nods to Superman, “Kryptonite” ignited the group’s rise by stirring intense early interest at the local independent station Biloxi’s WCPR. That airplay quickly turned the band into a regional draw, allowing them to fill sizable hometown venues and ultimately carry their reputation well beyond the Deep South to landmark clubs such as New York’s CBGB.
The original lineup—vocalist and drummer Brad Arnold, guitarist Matt Roberts, and bassist Todd Harrell—grew up in Escatawpa, a close-knit town of roughly eight thousand residents. Although raised in devout homes, the three developed a passion for rock & roll while still young and first assembled as a trio in 1994 to perform at a backyard gathering. Over time their style matured, prompting the addition of guitarist Chris Henderson and the hiring of a session drummer that freed Arnold to handle lead vocals on stage. After working the Gulf Coast circuit, the band traveled to New York, where a showcase at CBGB attracted the notice of Republic Records. The Universal-owned label signed them and released their major-label debut, The Better Life, at the start of 2000.
The Better Life ranked among the top-selling albums of its year, earning quadruple-platinum certification within twelve months and yielding multiple hit singles. Momentum continued with 2002’s Away from the Sun, which entered the Billboard Top 200 at number eight and likewise achieved multi-platinum status. The group maintained a rigorous touring schedule through 2003 and 2004, issuing the live EP Another 700 Miles in November 2003 to bridge the gap between studio releases. Early 2005 brought the heavier Seventeen Days, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and reached platinum within its first week. Their self-titled follow-up arrived in May 2008 and duplicated that chart-topping debut.
Extensive touring filled 2009, capped by a digital-only acoustic holiday collection late in the year; work on the next studio effort began in 2010 under producer Howard Benson. Recording sessions alternated between Los Angeles and Tokyo, resulting in Time of My Life in 2011. The following year the band issued its inaugural Greatest Hits package, introducing three new songs that also marked the arrival of guitarist Chet Roberts, the former guitar technician who succeeded founding member Matt Roberts. By 2013 bassist Todd Harrell had left, making room for Justin Biltonen. With the revised roster, 3 Doors Down recorded their sixth album alongside producer Matt Wallace, delivering Us and the Night in March 2016.
