Biography
Vocalist Alex Band and guitarist Aaron Kamin launched the Calling in 1999, placing the act in the company of other early-21st-century radio staples such as Matchbox Twenty, Train, and Fastball. Both Los Angeles natives, the pair started the band while still teenagers—Kamin was then dating Band’s sister—and soon landed a development contract with RCA. Session musicians were brought in to complete the tracks, and the resulting album, Camino Palmero, appeared in July 2001. Although rooted in post-grunge, the record found widespread favor through its standout love song “Wherever You Will Go,” an inescapable Top Five single in numerous territories. The project moved more than five million copies worldwide and earned gold status in the United States, clearing the path for the June 2004 release of Two. Interest had already slipped by then, however, and the Calling entered an indefinite hiatus the following year while Alex Band turned to solo work.
