Biography
Chicago-based hard rock and alt-metal outfit SOiL achieved mainstream breakthrough in 2001 via their second studio album Scars, which spotlighted the radio singles "Halo" and "Unreal." Through repeated lineup adjustments the group has stayed a fixture on active rock airplay, issuing the aggressive full-lengths re.de.fine. (2004), True Self (2006), Picture Perfect (2009), Whole (2013), and Play It Forward (2022); throughout those years guitarist Adam Zadel and bassist Tim King have remained the only unchanging members.
The band coalesced in 1997 with vocalist Ryan McCombs, drummer Tom Schofield, bassist Tim King, and guitarists Adam Zadel and Shaun Glass. Their first EP, El Chupacabra!, surfaced in 1998 and was followed the next year by the album Throttle Junkies. Scars, the sophomore LP, gained traction on both domestic and overseas charts behind the singles "Unreal" and "Halo." An untitled EP appeared in 2001, after which re.de.fine. arrived in 2004 and featured a strongly charting title track. McCombs departed that same year and later joined Drowning Pool. A.J. Cavalier stepped in as vocalist for the 2006 DRT debut True Self; the record was promoted with festival dates across Europe and North American support runs alongside Sevendust, 10 Years, and Godsmack. Picture Perfect followed in 2009, led by the single "Like It Is," and marked Cavalier’s final studio album with the band.
SOiL’s subsequent release was the 2012 live set Re-Live-ing the Scars: In London, captured the prior year. Their sixth studio effort, Whole, emerged in 2013 and welcomed the return of original frontman Ryan McCombs. The first career-spanning collection, Scream: The Essentials, was issued in 2017. In 2022 the group unveiled a cover of the Foo Fighters’ “Monkey Wrench” as a tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins; the track was included on the covers album Play It Forward, which appeared later that year. Restoration, featuring newly recorded studio versions of signature songs, arrived in 2023.
