Known for their dramatic stage performances and the black masks donned by most members during shows, Mushroomhead rank among the more distinctive and exploratory alternative metal acts to surface in the 1990s. Their intense yet tuneful alternative metal blends hip-hop, punk, and goth rock with industrial and techno influences. Following the independent release of their self-titled debut in 1995, the group has moved more than two million albums globally, with standout efforts including XIII in 2003, Savior Sorrow in 2006, and The Righteous & the Butterfly in 2014.

Mushroomhead began performing in disguise in 1993 after drummer Skinny assembled the project. Conceived initially as a side venture while participants remained active in separate Cleveland outfits, the band adopted the black masks—resembling a hybrid of S&M/bondage and World War I gas masks—to preserve anonymity. The sole member who forgoes the black mask applies Kiss-style clown makeup instead. Within several years the ensemble had become a leading local draw in Cleveland, and the masks remained after the musicians observed the fascination they generated.

The self-titled debut appeared independently in 1995, succeeded by Superbuick in 1996 and M3 in 1999. Eclipse issued the next album, XX, in 2001 after the Midwesterners signed with the label in 2000. At the time of their subsequent Universal Records deal to reissue XX, the lineup comprised drummer/founder Skinny, lead vocalists J-Mann and Jeffrey Nothing, guitarists Bronson and Gravy, keyboardist Shmotz, bassist Pig Benis, and sample provider Stitch. Their first original Universal release, the dynamic XIII, surfaced in 2003, yet the band soon parted from both the label and J-Mann amid a following tour. Maintaining their D.I.Y. approach, Mushroomhead recruited Waylon, previously of 3 Quarters Dead, as the new frontman.

The concert film Mushroomhead, Vol. 1 appeared in mid-2005, after which Savior Sorrow, issued through New York-based indie Megaforce Records, arrived to critical praise in September 2006. The seventh studio album, Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, followed in 2010. The Righteous & the Butterfly, released in 2014, marked the first Mushroomhead album to enter the Top 20 of the Billboard Top 200. A Wonderful Life, the eighth studio LP and the band’s initial outing on Napalm Records, introduced vocalists Steve Rauckhorst and Jackie LaPonza along with guitarist Tom Shaffner in 2020, replacing longtime vocalist Jeffrey Nothing and guitarist Tommy Church.
