In late 1997, veterans of earlier bands launched the heavy metal outfit Five Foot Thick in Spokane, Washington. Adjustments within the rhythm section eventually produced a stable quintet of vocalist Bryan Dilling, guitarist George Silva, keyboardist Matt "Gzus" Gonzales, bassist Kris Demers, and drummer Silas McQuain. Steady regional performances across the Northwest gradually expanded their audience, prompting the independent issuance of their debut album Circles in 2000. That recording raised the group’s profile enough for them to support major touring acts and headline progressively larger rooms. Their momentum peaked with a sellout at Spokane’s 750-seat Metropolitan Theater of Performing Arts. A national contract with Eclipse Records followed in May 2003, yielding the first widely distributed Five Foot Thick album, Blood Puddle, on November 4, 2003.
